Our Purpose
We are the Native Title Holders of Alice Springs
Our purpose as Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation is about empowering, recognising and respecting Apmereke-artweye (landowners) as leaders with a strong voice on our Central Arrernte apmere (country).
Who is Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation?
The Arrernte people of the Antulye, Irlpme and Mparntwe estate groups are the traditional owners of land in and around Alice Springs since the Altyerre (dreaming).
In 1999 the Federal Court of Australia found that the estate groups continue to hold their rights and interests for the Native Title Determination area of Alice Springs.
The Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation (LAAC) is their Registered Native Title Body Corporate and agent in matters relating to their native title.
LAAC has 12 objectives including providing leadership and support, taking advantage of investment and commercial opportunities to generate assets and funds, advancing the social, cultural, political, economic and legal interests of native title holders.
LAAC’s core business is to hold land vested in, or transferred to it for the benefit of Native Title Holders and protection of their native title rights and interests of said land.
LAAC is striving to relieve the poverty, misfortune, disadvantage, distress, dispossession and suffering of native title holders through various means including, but not limited to, the provision of cultural, educational, health, transport and communication services and facilities.
LAAC seeks to do so by developing and growing a strong corporate foundation based on cultural strength, good corporate governance and business and asset development.
Native Title
Since its establishment, LAAC has proudly upheld its role as the recognised Native Title Body Corporate for the Mparntwe, Irlpme, and Antulye Estate Groups. This responsibility involves protecting and managing Native Title rights and interests on behalf of Traditional Owners.
Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs)
Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation administers five Indigenous Land Use Agreements and a land release agreement. These agreements concern development within particular parts of the determination area.
